Process

Don’t worry about having everything sorted.

Many collections arrive loosely packed, partially organised, or with unknown formats and quantities. An educated guess is completely fine — part of the process is helping you work through what you have and determining the best approach from there.

Initial enquiries are obligation-free and intended to help you understand your options clearly before committing to any work.

  1. Get Your Estimate

Start by telling us what you have; media type and quantity— even an educated guess is completely fine. We’ll help clarify formats, quantities and the best approach from there.

  2. Intake

If needed, book a free 30-minute in person review session. We’ll assess your collection, recommend the best fit, formalise your quote, and confirm deposit before work begins. Longer sessions and guidance available at request.

  3. Careful Digitisation

Once approved, your items are digitised and prepared according to the agreed scope, with human care and professional equipment.

  4. Delivery & Return

Your digital files are delivered by download link, with optional physical storage media available as an add-on. Your originals are then returned by collection, local delivery, or courier.

How Your Originals Are Handled

Your photographs, tapes, documents and family materials are treated as irreplaceable originals, not bulk media.

Collections are reviewed before work begins, kept organised throughout digitisation, and returned using the agreed collection, delivery or courier method. Where items are fragile or unusual, handling is discussed before any work proceeds.

Personally handled • Carefully organised • No work without approval • Returned safely

ThroughLine grew from helping my Grandpa Laurie preserve photographs and family memories while living with Alzheimer’s.

The experience shaped the values that continue to guide the studio today: careful handling, thoughtful digitisation and a process designed to feel approachable rather than overwhelming.

Whether working with a small group of photographs or an extensive family archive, the focus remains the same — clear communication, organised delivery and respectful handling throughout.

Your Questions, Answered

  • ThroughLine works with a wide range of family and personal materials, including loose photographs, slides, negatives, documents, letters, diaries, books, photo albums, VHS and camcorder tapes, audio cassettes, vinyl records, CDs, and DVDs. The service is designed for both straightforward items and many older or more delicate materials, provided they can be handled safely.

  • Yes. ThroughLine is a boutique sole trader business, so you deal directly with me from first enquiry through to final delivery. That means your materials are handled personally, with a careful process for assessment, quoting, digitisation, and return.

  • It begins with an online estimate, followed by a free 30-minute assessment session at my studio in Adelaide, South Australia; or at your home if travel is needed. During that session, we go through the materials together, assess condition and handling requirements, confirm the most suitable service, and identify any labelling, sorting, or special handling needs before a formal quote is prepared. Once the quote is approved and the deposit is paid, the work goes ahead, followed by final payment, digital delivery, and return of originals in the way that best suits your needs.

  • Yes. All work is formally quoted after the materials have been reviewed in person or online. That way, the quote reflects the collection itself, including format, quantity, condition, handling needs, and any sorting or special requirements, before anything begins. It also means that you fully control and approve all work undertaken.

  • Local drop-off at my Studio in Gilles Street is included, and pickup is available upon enquiry (fees may apply). Postage or courier service is generally used only where distance or circumstances make that the most practical option. Especially fragile, valuable, oversized, or condition-sensitive materials are best reviewed in person wherever possible.

  • Care for precious family items is ThroughLines core business, in many cases it simply means taking a more tailored approach from the start. During the assessment session, we go through the materials together to identify any sorting, labelling, handling, or organisational needs before the quote is finalised. Depending on the collection, this may also include sleeve handling, album-related handling, individual extraction work, or other custom add-ons to support a more careful and organised result.

  • Digital files are normally delivered as a downloadable transfer, with the format and structure matched to the service and the material. Where desired, physical delivery media is also available.

Files are prepared in a clear and usable way, with straightforward naming and foldering included as standard for most services. More custom naming, sorting, or organisation can also be discussed where needed.

  • Yes. Restoration and image enhancement can be discussed as an add-on where suitable, particularly for photographs that would benefit from extra attention beyond the standard workflow. More tailored work can also be scoped for collections that need a more individual approach.

ThroughLine also offers bespoke memory-preservation projects by enquiry, including work shaped around interviews, research, and thoughtfully compiled books or video pieces. These can be discussed and scoped as part of a custom quote.

  • Timing is confirmed as part of the formal quote, once the materials have been reviewed and the scope of work is clear. That allows the estimate to reflect the type of material, quantity, condition, handling requirements, and any agreed add-ons or special work, rather than relying on a generic turnaround promise.

Payment is handled in two stages. A deposit is paid once the quote is approved and before work begins, with the remaining balance due before files are released or originals are returned.

  • Yes, where capacity allows. If you have a specific deadline in mind, that can be raised at the estimate and assessment stage so the work can be scoped accordingly. Rush work is priced separately and confirmed as part of the formal quote.

  • Yes. ThroughLine can assist with digitisation and memory-preservation work for birthdays, anniversaries, funerals and memorial services, estates, and family history or genealogy projects. The service can be tailored to the collection and the purpose, whether you are preserving originals, preparing files to share with family, or creating something more thoughtful from the material.
